COVID-19: FMC Lokoja Staff Down Tools Indefinitely Over Attack By Hoodlums

Health workers at the Federal Medical Centre, Lokoja in Kogi State have announced total withdrawal of services to patients till further notice.

Arising from an emergency Joint Action Congress (JAC) meeting in Lokoja on Wednesday, the health workers said the decision to down tools is premised on the attack to their lives and properties this morning by unknown hoodlums.

They also resolved to suspend the proposed peaceful protest scheduled for today.

“Some equipment like infrared thermometers, laptops, ATM cards, car keys, two motorcycles and other materials which are vital in providing care were carted away by the hoodlums. Also, our administrative block was vandalised,” they said.

The workers’ union of the health institution warned that they will resume work until security of lives and properties is guaranteed.

They also gave other conditions to be met before services can be restored in the hospital which include, adequate provision of personal protective equipments (PPE), validation of Covid-19 status of Accident & Emergency staff that went on self isolation, expanding triage points and provision of testing facilities (PCR machine).

They also insisted that the number of patients to be attended to per clinic should be maximum of twenty per day.

Patients on appointment should be stratified into two sessions to reduce crowd and canopies should be provided.

The JAC emergency meeting was attended by Dr. Adeyemi Williams, Chairman of MDCAN; Dr. Nnana Agwu, President of ARD; Comrade Obajemu Samuel, Chairman of JOHESU; Pharm, Lawal Mohammed, Secretary of JOHESU; Comrade John Omoche, Chairman of MHWUN; Comrade Usman Gabriel, Chairman of SSA Chairman; and Comrade Abdulmalik Idris, Chairman of NANNM.

Gunmen, on Wednesday, attacked the Federal Medical Centre (FMC) in Lokoja, Kogi state, and disrupted a COVID-19 press conference.

The hospital had scheduled a media briefing for the day to demand a COVID-19 screening centre in the state and to also speak about the challenges health workers are facing with regard to the disease.

The armed men were said to have arrived at the facility in three vehicles and shotbsporadically to disperse the meeting.

Health workers were said to have been harassed by the gunmen who took away laptops, blood specimen and vital documents.

ATTACK ON FEDERAL MEDICAL CENTRE LOKOJA FACILITIES: KOGI POLICE COMMAND PROMISE TO UNRAVEL, ARREST PERPETRATORS.

On the 1st of July, 2020 the Command received report of attacked on the facilities of Federal Medical Cenre, Lokoja. The Commissioner of Police, Kogi State Police Command, Ede Ayuba Ekpeji immediately visited the scene on the spot assessment and equally deployed team of operatives to the area to reassure the Staff of Federal Medical Centre of their safety.

The Commissioner immediately ordered a team of detectives attached to State Investigation Department under the supervision of the Deputy Commissioner of Police, Investigation to commence investigation with a view to unravel and arrest the perpetrators of the act.

FMC scuffle : Kogi State Government Reacts

The attention of the Kogi State Government has been drawn to the unfortunate scuffle between the Staff of the Federal Medical Centre, Lokoja and some patients’ relatives at the hospital, this morning.

Preliminary findings revealed that the violence ensued when relations of patients in the medical facility protested against the failure of the management of the hospital to attend to them.

Many people in the Emergency Ward were left unattended to and a mother delivered at the gate of the hospital. That generated a lot of public tension in the State.

Tension started building since yesterday when patients and their relatives learnt of a plan by the medical staff to stage a protest today, seeking protection from Covid-19.

We urge the people of the State to remain calm as Government will ensure maintenance of law and order.

We also sue for calm and urge medical authorities to remain committed to their medical profession and responsibilities as Government will protect them in order to give them the confidence to deliver. Healthcare management must never be politicized.

The Kogi State Government will also make the State-owned Specialist Hospital available to patients in critical condition and who are denied medical attention by the authorities of the Federal Medical Centre, Lokoja.
