David Gbodi Odaibo, a 42-year-old tech whiz who just secured a $125 million (about N69 billion) US government contract, died in his sleep, according to reports.
David is the son of Prof. Stephen Odaibo, one of Nigeria’s founding fathers of surgery and a foundation lecturer and consultant at the University of Ilorin College of Medicine. He was born in Ogori in the Ogori-Magongo local government of Kogi state.
About a week before his death, he built the algorithm for automatically detecting threats at airports and secured a $125 million contract from the Department of Homeland Security. Also Read: NBTE Zonal Director Assures Of Partnership With Kogi Poly For Effective Service Delivery
Stephen Odaibo, his brother, revealed the news on Sunday, a day after the event.
Stephen, who shared the news on his Linkedin page, clarified that his brother had been completely vaccinated and did not have COVID-19.
“My brother passed away yesterday,” he claims. My heart is shattered. In his sleep, he experienced a cardiac arrhythmia/heart attack. He had been fully immunized and was free of covid. He and I were inseparably linked. David was a wonderful person who was kind, compassionate, bright, and humble.
“He was a Kaggle Grandmaster, the greatest attainable skill level in practical Machine Learning, and he possessed a PhD in Computer Engineering. He was the one who first exposed me to artificial intelligence. His system for automatically detecting dangers at airports was just awarded a $125 million contract by the Department of Homeland Security.
“His code outperformed firms with billion-dollar budgets. So please keep my brother David in mind as you fly safely across the skies in the future. Our hearts are shattered. My parents, his wife, and their two young children are all in dire straits. He has four siblings. We are heartbroken.
“David and I had a lot of same interests and would often converse for hours. Our relationship was both unusual and valuable. We used the phrase “love you” to end our phone chats.
“Give your loved ones a hug and tell them you care. Even though grief arrives in the night, pleasure comes in the morning. He said, “I’m comforted by the fact that David is with our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.”
