According to the Daily Independent, Edo Governor Godwin Obaseki has requested an unqualified apology from the leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Edo State, headed by Dr. Tony Aziegbemi.

Aside from that, the governor reportedly requested that the Edo PDP chairman withdraw his letter to the party’s national chairman, Prince Uche Secondus, in which he accused Obaseki of conspiring to dissolve validly-elected wards, local government areas, and state executives.

The State Working Committee (SWC), in a May 10 letter addressed to the PDP national chairman and signed by chairman Dr. Tony Aziegbemi and secretary Hillary Otsu, also called for the resignation of Deputy Governor Philip Shaibu as part of the power-sharing arrangement.

According to the SWC, the “looming crisis” was sparked by the “acquiescence” of members of the National Working Committee (NWC), who negotiated Obaseki’s transition to the PDP and decided on the incorporation of advanced members and the distribution of appointments after the election.

They also said that Obaseki’s proposed dissolution and harmonization were intended to keep Edo citizens and the PDP hostage.

“At an emergency meeting, the State Chairman, Dr. Tony Aziegbemi, briefed the SWC and LGA party chairmen on Obaseki’s May 8, 2021 meeting at the Government House, Benin, with the agenda to recommend dissolution of Edo State executive committees at all levels,” according to the SWC.

“After more than five hours of deliberation, the following resolutions were adopted: the Edo State PDP’s extended SWC and local government chairmen reject the proposal to abolish the PDP’s legitimately-elected executive committee members at the ward, local government, and state levels in its entirety.

“We also strongly denounce the convening of a meeting aimed at ambushing the PDP’s Edo State Chairman (who is constitutionally empowered to call such a meeting), to which only three old PDP members (Dokpesi, Ikimi, and Oghiadomhe) attended, as opposed to ten members from the Obaseki faction who defected from the APC to the PDP.

“We, hereby, reiterate to our party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) that the question of executive committee dissolution in Edo State is “sub-judice,” and that revisiting it by the party would be an act of contempt of court.”

During a meeting between the aggrieved PDP Exco and Governor Obaseki on Thursday, a credible source said the governor, who was enraged by the content of the letter, requested an apology and a withdrawal of the letter.

Aziegbemi and his team are expected to release a public statement on the matter shortly, according to reports.
It remains to be seen whether or not they will withdraw the message.

When contacted, the befuddled PDP chairman said that only the governor would confirm whether or not the report is accurate.

“It’s the first time I’ve heard that from you.
Only the governor can confirm whether or not that happened,” he said.
